The Greatest Gift Ever Given

GiftA very close friend of mine recently had a beautiful baby boy. It brought to mind all the baby gear I had stored away from my little boy. I scheduled some time to visit that untouched corner of my home in order to gather those treasures for her.

To my surprise I found more than I expected. In my conversations with her I mentioned that I may have a few articles of clothing that Zachary never got the chance to wear. I truly missed the mark.

As I went through the storage I found unwrapped gifts that I was given during a baby shower and possibly at the hospital. I unearthed rattles, bottles, a breast pump, blankets, a diaper bag, towels and more clothing than I could ever have imagined. My only excuse is that I had purchased so much clothing and other knick knacks myself that I never felt the need to use these precious gifts.

I now wonder about the friends and family who took the time to find a perfect gift for my little one. Did they visit hoping to see how I have made use of their gifts? I felt so much remorse knowing now that I had just stuffed them in a corner.

Have you ever had a gift rejected by the person you had given it to? Sometimes it may not be an outright rejection. Sometimes your gift may never be used or sometimes the receiver will take it to the store to have it exchanged for something they really want. I classify that as a rejection because in boils down to the fact that you have given a gift that the receiver cannot use.

It brings to mind the one gift that we all need, yet so few of us accept it. It costs so much, yet it was freely given to all mankind. I think of my Savior and how he must feel whenever I turn my back on the gift that he has given so that I may one day have life eternal with him. Dear Jesus, I pray that we all determine to never turn our backs on your very precious gift.

The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Rom 6:23
