Guilty: I Hate Voicemail

Posted by on Oct 27, 2011 in Productivity, Random Thoughts | 4 comments

I use a lot of productivity tools on my computer to stay on top of my daily to-do lists. I manage to do well in most areas except when it comes to my voice mail. I hate checking voice mail but as it turns out I have specific hours for answering my phone throughout the day so no doubt I do manage to get a few voice messages.

I try let people know that I do not immediately check my messages. Sometimes it happens up to five to seven days after the messages have been left. When I do get around to checking it is only to get rid of the constant reminders that my phone sends out to check the messages.

Is there anyone out there with me on this? I cannot really explain the reason behind the aversion it is just something that just is. Some would say that is just suicide for business but somehow the people who need to reach me find a way to other than voice mail. Those that work with me know that I respond faster to an email, a text or a quick message on Facebook or Skype. Send me a tweet I will respond faster than when a voice mail is left.

I have so far not suffered any adverse losses for my delinquency but I am taking an oath to do better and perhaps to find a service that would transcribe my voice mail so that I can get to them much sooner. I found a few of them on the web but the reviews are not all that great. I will continue my search but if you have suggestions let me know.

Until I manage to right this wrong just send me an email, a tweet, Skype me or try calling me again because when the time is right I do answer my phone.

Here’s my question, do you share my aversion to voice mail?

Crystal I’m the same way with voicemail. The whole process is just too slow for today’s digital world of instant communication. When I changed my cell phone plan I actually decided to drop the voicemail feature. Since I don’t do much business over the phone, I can get away with this. I can still see if I miss any calls via call display and if it is urgent, they will likely try phoning back later.

Disqus generic email templateThanks for your comment Jeremy. Yes, turning off the voicemail altogether is s great idea and I am encouraging people I come into contact with to use other methods to contact me rather than relying on the phone.
